For the most part of 2020, the world has been in a state of turmoil, to put it kindly. So, it’s no wonder we’re in need of some serious TLC and with spas now given the go-ahead to reopen (albeit with reduced treatment menus), what better way to rejuvenate than heading for a British “spacation”. After all, there is almost nothing quite like slipping into a soft, white robe, switching your phone to ‘do not disturb’ and being pampered head-to-toe. Ah, total bliss!

If, like me, you marvel at the sheer joy of escaping the worldly cares and doldrums of everyday life to indulge in some quality ‘me time’, then you’re in for a treat! Here’s a round up of some of my favourite spas near London that are now open to offer you the rest and relaxation you’ve craved all these months.

Note: Steam rooms and saunas in England and Northern Ireland are currently closed as per government guidance. At the moment, most hotel spas are only open to resident guests. The hotels listed in this article are implementing pre-treatment temperature checks, some offering a reduced treatment list. Given that government guidance is liable to change quickly, we’d strongly recommend calling the hotel to double check the latest rules when you book.

1. Alexander House & Utopia Spa

A 5 star country hotel located just outside of London, Alexander House is set within 120 acres of beautiful gardens (perfect for a picnic or afternoon tea) with a stunning spa. You’d be thrilled to know, all treatments including massages and facials are now available but do book in advance to avoid any disappointments. If you’re not ready to indulge in a massage just yet, the award-winning, world-class Utopia Spa has plenty of facilities to offer. A huge indoor thermal pool with jacuzzi surrounded by Grecian- inspired interiors, and an outdoor Zen garden which boasts of a bespoke barrel sauna (temporarily closed due to government guidance) and a hot tub.  Book a night or two at this luxury retreat for a romantic getaway.

From £309 per room for an overnight stay with breakfast and dinner. Spa access not included.

2. Mallory Court Hotel and Spa

Set in 10 acres of lush, green grounds, Mallory Court is the epitome of quintessentially English country house hotel. Facilities at the Elan Spa at Mallory Court include an indoor hydro pool, an outdoor vitality pool, with the perfect temperature may I add, and a wide range of treatments. Try the Kundalini Back Massage to melt away body aches and pains whilst leaving you completely energized. With only 43 bedrooms and limited access to the spa, the hotel is the perfect choice for a quiet, private countryside escape.

From £189 per person for an overnight stay with breakfast, dinner, spa access and 55 minute ESPA treatment.

3. Pennyhill Park

This Surrey countryside is renowned for its Michelin starred dining, 5 star hospitality and, wait for it, 45,000sq. ft. award-winning spa! Although the Thermal Heaven is currently closed, there are eight indoor and outdoor pools with several open-air hot tubs that will help your troubles float away. Choose from natural and organic treatments designed to detox, cleanse and relax.

From £629 per room for an overnight stay with breakfast, lunch & dinner and 60 minutes treatment per person.

4. Rowhill Grange & Utopia Spa

Less than an hours’ drive from London, this Kent countryside has everything you can expect from a luxury spa hotel. Heated swimming pool? Check. Hydrotherapy pool and jacuzzi? Check. Monsoon showers? Check. Hair and nail spa? Check. The two-floor Utopia spa with Roman-inspired interiors will transport you to a world of tranquility. To ensure a limited capacity, access to the spa must be pre-booked with a small fee of £20. Otherwise, complimentary with a pre-booked treatment.

From £295 per room for an overnight stay with breakfast and dinner. Spa access not included.

5. The Grove Hotel

The Grove Hotel is set in 300 acres of lush Hertfordshire countryside – but it’s their award-winning Sequoia spa that is the real showstopper. While spa days are currently on hold until further notice, in-house guests can make full use of the indoor adult-only pool and Jacuzzi. Throw in a treatment and you got yourself the ultimate detox getaway.
