The Ultimate gift guide for Desi Mums

When you need the mother of all presents on 11th March

ARTICLE BY : Abha Shah

Newsflash, Mother’s Day is fast approaching. For those of you who had forgotten – shame, shame! – this year it falls on 11th March.

While we know you do your best to appreciate your mum year round, Mothering Sunday is an extra chance to show the most important lady in your life just how much she means to you.

After all, she’s been by your side for all the major milestones; from kissing you goodbye on the first day of school, celebrating your first job and now, helping you prepare for the biggest day of your life – she’s truly one in a million.

Whether you want to spoil her with a luxe treat or would prefer ideas for much needed mother-daughter time, our gift guide will provide the perfect inspo.

We’re not talking about just mums, either. Consider a gift for all the strong mother figures in your life; aunts, grandmothers and future mothers-in-law (it can’t hurt to rack up the brownie points).

We’re sure they’ll be as delighted by a thoughtful present come 11th March too.

Jasmine Indian Tea at Taj 51 Buckingham Gate, London
The Taj’s Jasmine Indian Tea is newcomer to its menu and promises to be a delightful experience for you and your Queen bee. It’s a lavish feast of sarnies (think spiced creamed cheese and savoury crispy chicken tikka spring rolls – yum) plus Gulab Jamun and chocolate Rasmalai. Scones are a non-negotiable feature for all high teas, and the Taj’s are a fragrant rose flavour served with a dollop of homemade Alphonso mango compote and cinnamon clotted cream. It’s all designed to be washed down with gently spiced brews and a salty caramel lassi with a chikki toffee crunch. Wedding diet; what wedding diet?
The Jasmine Indian Afternoon tea is £40 per person.

F&M Piccadilly Stem Ginger Biscuits

Perfectly spiced and warming, each crumbly biscuit is made with stem ginger, a familiar taste for Asian mums. If she tells you off for unnecessary spending, you can tell her they’re the Queen’s favourites. Well, the store has a Royal Warrant so, you know… it could be true.
£7.50 for 200g

Did you know that apart from selling the latest couture and having an incredible food hall, Harrods is also home to a surprisingly large Moroccan spa? Take your mum to Urban Retreat’s world-class Moroccan Hammam Spa on the 5th floor of the iconic store for a little R&R.
The signature experience is the luxurious Hammam Ritual, which will leave skin silky soft and oh-so moisturised. Afterwards unwind in the fabulous lounge with Moroccan tea, nuts and dates.
From £60 per person for the Discovery Hammam experience (60min).

The Ritual of Ayurveda Balancing Ritual
It’s a well-known fact that mums hardly ever get the luxury of 'me time'. They’re always racing around cooking,  working or looking after someone other than themselves. What’s needed is an indulgent product that will give her five minutes of every day luxury. Whether she has a beauty routine or not, Mother’s Day could be the opportune time shake things up with a new Ritual. We love this gift set from Rituals, which contains luxurious shower foam, shower oil, a scrub and body cream all in a beautifully scented balance of Indian Rose and Sweet Almond Oil.

Enjoy a cultural day out at Illuminating India at the Science Museum in South Kensington. There are two exhibitions; one on Indian photography, a fascinating snapshot (pardon the pun) of life from 1857 to the present day. The other showcases the country’s game-changing science, tech and mathematical discoveries and how its contributions aided global progress. Both shows are a captivating kaleidoscope into the ingenuity of the motherland – she’ll love it.

Radio Bombay Eau de Parfum 100ml
If your mum loves a fragrance (and frankly who doesn’t?) get her a new one to add to her scent wardrobe. Spirited in the hot Bandra heat, it features woody top notes with copper, cedar and a heart of sandalwood, radiant iris and boronia, making it the perfect mix for the young-at-heart mama. It’s medium bodied, so wearable for every day as well as all those special occasions she’s got in the diary.

Anita Dongre Stole with tassel detailing
Who wouldn’t adore a made-to-order accessory from one of India’s top designers? We think Anita Dongre’s beautiful georgette stole with tassels would make a welcome addition to any mum’s wardrobe. Inspired by Rajasthani nature, it’s a fittingly royal gift for your Queen.

We love the bright hues in the Double Tulips Bunch but if your ma’s more of a roses kind of woman there are suitable florals there too.

Indian Afternoon Tea at Praza, Birmingham
All mums love a cuppa, but this afternoon tea has a deliciously Desi twist. Praza in Birmingham runs its Indian Afternoon Tea experience every Sunday, serving warming chais alongside sweet and savory classics; think dahi puri chaat, Mumbai bhel and a finger sandwich selection with chicken tikka or paneer khatti roll. There are some unique surprises to stop her from scolding you about spending cash on something she could have whipped up at home – the chocochori (a chocolate kachori) and almond Punjabi cookies will keep her sweet for days to come.
