Makeup is one such aspect that has undergone a plethora of changes in the last few decades. Starting out with a basic kohl and eyeliner with a shimmery eye shadow, today the makeup trends have evolved to more complex and well blended looks including the classic smokey eyes, contoured faces and highlighted cheeks.
Celebrity makeup artist Ganga, who has been working in the industry for over a decade traces how wedding makeup has changed over the years. "I've been a makeup artist for just over 14 years so I've definitely seen a huge change from when I first entered this industry. My personal aesthetic has always been to keep skin looking natural and working on enhancing a bride's natural features. However, when I first entered the Asian wedding industry, brides were opting for bold and traditional looks. Trends like red lips and gold eyes were a major trend, and some brides even experimented with vibrant colours on the eyes," shared Ganga.
The last few years has seen a boom in the digital world, and bridal makeup has seen an immense transformation too. Thanks to people like Kim K, the idea of a well-sculpted face gained prominence and soon became a favourite for many brides. Ganga is of the opinion that with the introduction of social media, brides have started learning and experimenting more with their makeup at home. They have been trying out professional techniques such as contouring and highlighting, and more and more brides are leaning towards the idea of a defined look.
"Around the same time (8-9 years ago), the lash market grew dramatically and, as we all know, eyes are a focal point when it comes to bridal makeup—and they really helped define the eyes even more," remember Ganga. "I remember having about 6-7 options when I first started bridal makeup over a decade ago and I now have about 20 different ranges of strip lashes, as well as a range of individual lashes!" From statement lashes to the introduction of eyelash extensions, today the mere addition of eyelashes and mascara can be a gamechanger when it comes to wedding makeup. It has the power to instantly lift the beauty and make your face look more alive.
"I personally love natural glam makeup, it’s something I have specialised in since I started in the beauty industry," quotes Ganga. "With the recent pandemic, we saw a lot of brides focusing more on skin care and getting used to not wearing makeup, which I think is great! I love that brides are embracing natural beauty. So this year, and even for 2022, many brides are opting for a more stripped back natural-glam look along with more neutral tones such as peaches, bronzes and earthy tones. It’s great to see brides happy to embrace this style."
