If there's one rom com on your must-watch list, it's Mubarakan. The movie, out 28th July, tells the story of twin brothers and their adventures as they head towards weddings. The star cast includes Anil Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Ileana D'Cruz and Athiya Shetty, who we caught up to talk about the film...
How do you feel now Mubarakan has wrapped?
I'm excited and nervous now it’s about to be released, but I’m also sad because filming has come to end! It’s all very bittersweet.
You spent a lot of time filming in London; did you have a chance to explore?
London is one of my favourite cities. During filming we shot in some beautiful locations and I met some amazing people. Making Mubarakan allowed me to explore even more of London. But, I didn’t get to do any shopping because I was too busy eating! Honestly, London is a foodie’s paradise.
Tell me about your character, Binkle.
I was sold on the name! I mean who’s called Binkle?! She’s a good, traditional Punjabi girl and the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in London. But she's very rooted, sweet and innocent and a die-hard believer of true love, like a lot of us, I guess!
Binkle’s the only straightforward character in the film, which makes the mad situations that happen around her funnier. Mubarakan is about twin brothers, and my character is in love with one but engaged to the other. Drama! It’s a complex love triangle for such a simple girl like Binkle!
Have you ever found yourself in a similar love triangle?
Haha no way, it looks absolutely exhausting! Right now, my focus is divided between my career, my family and my friends.
Was it easy to relate to Binkle?
I understood her, I got her thought processes and reactions, but she is very different to me. That’s why it was so much fun to play her! I’m more of a tomboy.
The cast is full of well-known names including uncle-nephew Anil and Arjun Kapoor. Who was your favourite co-star?
After shooting for 45 days straight, you develop a bond with everyone and you become this beautiful, makeshift family. We all got along so well, and that definitely comes across when we do promotions for the film and press events. So you see, I couldn’t possibly pick just one favourite co-star!
As Maybelline India ambassador and Vogue cover girl, you’re carving out a rep as a fashion icon. What does style mean to you?
It’s really important to dress for your body type, that’s what I do. I don’t believe in fashion faux pas, and all these Do’s and Don’ts lists, because the fun of fashion is to experiment. As long as you’re comfortable and confident, you can pull anything off.
What are your fashion essentials?
I’m a minimalist so I love the classic look – the perfect denim jeans, the jacket that fits like a glove, the ultimate little black dress. You know, pieces that stand the test of time.
Who’s on your fashion radar?
Delhi-based designer Rahul Mishra really excites me. I love his use of fabrics, and his colour combinations are pure genius. He’s a wonderful designer that’s showing the world what contemporary Indian design is about.
Mubarakan is on general release from 28th July 2017.
