The Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated with much enthusiasm among married women. On this day, married women keep a fast to pray for the safe and long life of their husbands. Tradition says women should wake up early in the morning, and get ready before sunrise to binge on the Sargi – the food given to the daughter-in-law by the mother-in-law. Until moonrise they must keep their fast without any food and water. In the evening post an auspicious puja, they can break their fast, for which the women dress up. Like wearing mangal sutra, sindoor and henna, donning Indian wear in the colour red are indicators of a Hindu marriage and considered auspicious for the occasion.
