Mustard to marigold, lemon to canary, the yellow palette is a tried-and-true way to stand out with your occasion wear. Without question, the light and bright colour is perfect for haldis and mehndis, but the warm shades are equally stunning for weddings as well as cocktails and receptions. In fact, yellow has thawed out of its spring-summer avatar to become a firm favourite for winter nuptials. Sabyasachi aptly called the primary colour, “The extraordinary lightness of being for the most intimate of weddings,” in one of his recent social media posts. Up ahead, we have put together a definitive guide for you to nail a yellow lehenga or sari for your special occasion. From celebrities who championed the colour to designers who injected yellow in their 2020 collections, here’s all the inspiration you need.

Bollywood celebrities who are crushing on this bright trend
Find the perfect shade of yellow, and it will serve as a trend-proof investment for your traditional stash. A quick scroll through Instagram will prove that the best dressed names in Bollywood are in agreement. For Diwali this year, a number of Bollywood stars wore ensembles in sunset shades. Dia Mirza opted for a sustainable linen sari by Anavila for the occasion. Then there was Janhvi Kapoor, who wore a vibrant drape by Manish Malhotra from his Ruhaaniyat collection. Posing with husband Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra was spotted in a floral drape by Sabyasachi. Kajal Aggarwal, too, picked a gorgeous sunshine-hued drape from the couturier for her lockdown engagement ceremony in June earlier this year. She even wore a sunny kurta with blush salwar pants crafted using a bespoke weave from Madhurya Creations. Neha Kakkar relied on a lightweight sari by Shilpi Ahuja for her haldi in October 2020.

Your guide to shopping designer yellow lehengas and saris
Because of the versatility of yellow, a range of bridal wear designers presented a variety of silhouettes to choose from in their 2020 collections. Take Rahul Mishra for example. In his Lotus Pond collection, part of India Couture Week this year, the designer harnessed the glisten of canary yellow with the Bidri lehenga that’s paired with a layered foliage crop top and sheer organza dupatta. This lavishly hand-embroidered lehenga would be an apt choice for a daytime Anand Karaj. If you veer towards traditional crafts of the bygone era, you’ll love Manish Malhotra Awadhi brocade gharara in burnt yellow that’s enriched with real gold and silver zari border. Anita Dongre’s intricate Naomi lehenga, from Love Song collection, features the most intricate work and comes with a strappy blouse—a scene-stealing look for the sister of the bride. Brides who’d rather take baby steps can check out Sabyasachi tangerine lehengas. Or Suneet Varma’s ombré rendition with a glamorous one-shoulder blouse and draped skirt for your sangeet night.
JJ Valaya’s mustard drape from his Bursa range is a lesson in contemporising sari. Embroidered in contrasting blue threads and styled with a belt, the sari would be perfect to make a statement at your cocktail party. For your civil ceremony, consider a traditional weave such as the striking six-yard from Raw Mango’s latest Moomal collection. Part of the newest Meadaura line, Arpita Mehta’s camel festive classic tiered ruffle sari with rose gold star butti embroidery comes with a scene-stealing blouse that would make heads turn at your engagement ceremony.
