Every bridal wear outfit from Poornima Sharma’s eponymous label, Meera by Poornima Sharma is designed to engage and empower its wearer. “Conceived in 2018, Meera stands for diversity and fearlessness in the face of adversity,” she reveals. A trained dancer-turned-fashion designer and the daughter of famed dancer and the co-founder of Sydney-based Indian Dance Centre, Sri Raghavan Nair, Poornima stays true to her roots via creations that preserve our heritage and craftsmanship techniques, while bringing forth new design interventions.

The Bride Brigade
Poornima shares, “My signature aesthetic is determined by my bride. I create for her, I design for her. I make bespoke pieces according to my bride's needs so she can treasure them long after her wedding day.” Whether a sari or lehenga, each outfit is crafted from cloth sourced directly from weavers and bears embroidery reflecting the material and style peculiar to its Indian state of origin. “Being a dancer at heart, I pride myself in my ability to see life through an artistic lens. The result is exclusive, one in a million ensembles handcrafted with a touch of quirkiness and sexiness, perfect for the modern bride,” she adds. Her latest collection focuses on handblock prints on cotton. “I am fascinated by the creative process behind block printing, which is an entirely underappreciated technique. Cotton as a fabric, too, is underrated. It's a gorgeous lightweight textile that can be transformed from something simple to something luxurious.”

“From bringing back the 80s to embracing contemporary designs, trends may come and go, but an individual's unique style transcends time and place. It's an amalgamation of the past, present and future.”
