Istanbul, once the capital of three mighty empires, connects the European and Asian continents and dates back at least two millennia.
But far from being a dusty place living in the past, modern day Istanbul moves at breakneck speed, with art, culture, food and structural wonders waiting to be discovered by intrepid newlywed couples.
The city was once the jewel of the Ottoman Empire so where better to soak up its treasures and marvel at its architectural feats than in the opulent, five-star Çiragan Palace Kempinski?
What’s it like inside?
It’s everything you’d anticipate from a palace, topped by the crown of the Kempinski name, a hotel chain whose reputation for excellence is second to none.
Çiragan Palace was once the home of an Ottoman sultan so naturally wealth and decadence whisper from every corner. The décor is a regal homage to the past with classical architecture, tasteful features and ambient lighting in every direction.
The Palace sits on the banks of the Bosphorus and boasts one of the best views of the Asian continent.
How can we relax?
When in Turkey, do as the Turks do. For newlyweds, this must include an authentic Turkish bath experience.
Çiragan Palace boasts one of the best spas in the city with its Hammam experience one of the best in town. The spa, a vision of intricately carved marble lit by sunlight, also comprises an infinity outdoor pool, a whirlpool and massage and beauty treatment rooms as well as outdoor treatment cabanas to allow you to enjoy the fresh air as you relax.
What’s nearby?
While admirers of architecture will adore the Ottoman features speckled throughout the hotel, venturing into the city is a breeze thanks to its position between the Besiktas and Ortakoy districts.
Çiragan Palace is also a mere ten minutes drive from the boutiques and nightlife of Taksim Square, the city’s central hub, while the mosques and museums of Sultanahmet are also within easy reach.
What are the rooms like?
If you’re looking to splash out, the Imperial Palace suites offers every comfort, from silken king beds and vast marble bathrooms. Access to the suites are as grand as you’d imagine - we’re talking helicopter arrival and a personal butler, on call 24/7. Pick the Sultan Suite (one of the world’s priciest rooms at $15,000 a night), for 180° views of the Bosphorus.
If you want to avoid giving your bank manager a heart attack, Çiragan Palace’s guestrooms offer an equally luxurious space to bed down. While the view from the Superior Bosphorus room isn't quite 180°, it is just as enchanting.
Views
Çiragan Palace Kempinski sits on the shores of the Bosphorus, a natural strait that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia.
It’s the go-to destination for the young and glamorous. Visitors and locals alike love the hotel and its restaurants for the undisputed panoramas across the water.
Dining
The hotel’s two award-winning restaurants will engage your senses as it whisks you away on a culinary whirlwind.
Our favourite is Tugra Restaurant and Lounge, situated on the first floor of the original Çiragan Palace dating back to 17th century. Made with couples in mind, Tugra offers an exquisite fine dining experience with the Bosphorus in the background. It’s no wonder Travel + Leisure magazine considers the restaurant one of the “50 Most Romantic Places in the World”. From the service to the food, dining here is an enchanting experience.
Meanwhile, Laledan Restaurant offers a spectacular brunch and breakfast buffet (with more than 250 dishes) and is lovely for a light lunchtime snack.
THE KHUSH VERDICT
The hotel deserves every one of its five stars. From the faultless service to the breathtaking views of the Bosphorus, Çiragan Palace Kempinski is one of the most lavish hotels we’ve encountered.
Don't miss breakfast at Laledan restaurant. It's the ultimate way to fuel up for a day of sightseeing and urban wandering. With over 250 items on the menu, there’s something to tickle everyone’s fancy. Prefer to graze at leisure? Laledan’s Sunday brunch is legendary.
