It was in February 2018 when Mira Rajput Kapoor made her runway debut with Lakmé Fashion Week. Soon, pictures of Mira, dressed in a white Chanderi lehenga, alongside husband Shahid Kapoor playing showstoppers for Anita Dongre were liked and shared by romantics, Bollywood buffs and style watchers all over. Now FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week returns with a physical event in New Delhi, and the mother of two is topping trending charts once again. On March 25, 2022, Mira closed the show for designer Aisha Rao, who presented her spring/summer collection, ‘Divergence’. Aisha said, “The thought behind the collection is about appreciating our planet, which I believe is the most beautiful work of art. I think this collection was a transcendental escape into the beauty of the Earth.”

On strutting the runway

“Last time I took the ramp, I was expecting my son Zain. Since I’m walking alone this time around, I’m super nervous. But I’m also very excited because I love Aisha Rao as a designer,” Mira tells me. Owning the show, Mira sashayed down the runway in an ultra-glam multi-hued lehenga with a lilac base. The hero of her look was the tiny ornate choli in a butterfly-esque cut. The two-piece set, which we are bookmarking for a bride to wear for her cocktail, is doused in patchwork embellishments in a myriad colours and psychedelic motifs.

On why Aisha Rao’s clothes resonate with her style

Each ensemble from Aisha Rao’s latest outing reinvented traditional silhouettes with a contemporary touch. She brought to the fore intricate craft techniques such as pitta and Aari work along with zardosi and the inclusion of macramé and dori. The lehengas and swirling skirts are crafted using luxurious tissue, organza, lush raw silk as well as lightweight yet wearable georgette in keeping with soaring temperatures. “I love that Aisha’s clothes are easy-to-wear, vibrant and perfect for the young. Personally, her creations are great for me–I love to dress up but hate clothes that weigh me down. Aisha’s pieces are apt to dance the night away in and still look fabulous,” reinstates Mira.

On her go-to wedding outfit

Like any good zoomer, style isn’t about trying too hard for Mira. So her repertoire, and Instagram feed, are peppered with looks that marry cool with comfort. A glimpse at her constellation of Indian wear shows pieces that boast a repeat value and celebrate fluid textiles and indigenous crafts. But when attending weddings, she is, however, partial to one silhouette. Mira shares, “I love to wear saris. Whether light or heavy, I feel the most comfortable in a sari. It is very flattering on my body; it makes me look beautiful and feel sexy. The best part about wearing a sari is there’s so much you can do with the blouse, the drape, the colour, the styling. A beautiful sari by Aisha has also won my vote for a special occasion in the past.”
