Fashion fever has taken over the capital city of New Delhi, and the night of March 26, 2022 was an extravagant and dreamy affair with Tarun Tahiliani presenting his new luxury prét collection for “global India”. The collection showcased signature TT elements mixed with modern and contemporary silhouettes that brought to the runway a refreshing change. Speaking on the new line Tarun shared, “Global Indian is our luxury Prét collection and a representation of India modern and global, a concept very close to my heart. You can expect a new streamlined, sleek and aerodynamic collection with modern cuts and details, unusual textures with generous use of prints, zari threads and resham. We wanted a collection that is modern and confident, one which speaks to the future generation that is not scared to experiment.”

The Collection

Contemporary silhouettes, avant-garde drapes and a muted colour palette featuring ivory and black took the forefront in his show. The collection highlights the amalgamation of modern and traditional silhouettes as well as drapes with technology and aerodynamics. Here, structured draping marries tech. There are prints in the collection, which have been distorted and recreated in the most beautiful textiles. This collection is a new take on the future generation that is confident, experimental, has fashion in its roots and values avant-garde design. But some designs that truly hold a special place in Tarun's heart are “the fluid, draped waistcoats for men or our short waist, asymmetrical kurtas and the hipster skirt with a little drape for women along with the new, modern version of the concept sari, which you can wear with a bra top, a choli, a full sleeve blouse, or even just a black jersey crop top.”

“There are many interesting pieces in the new collection. You can expect an Indian modern fit wherein the fabrics have been woven in Banaras, worked on in Lucknow, along with fabrics such as crinkled, tulles, poplins, lycra, sushi voile, some shaded georgette and heavy satin too. We have an exquisite mushroo, woven in Banaras and pashminas, woven with a metallic thread more for use in saris, shawls and capes. We also have our foil jerseys that take our prints. We are also going ahead with some of our previous techniques like the Rangrez, where we now have the brocade strips that are handwoven for us, seamed on to gillets, trousers, cholis and in spite of being ready to wear pieces, are super luxe. You mix them correctly as you will see in the show, you have a wonderful dressy thing that somebody could wear to a mehndi or even a sangeet if you want more embroidery and definitely for somebody’s everyday life of elegance. On top of it, we have separates that mix and match with each other and that’s how we made luxe prét," shared Tarun.

The designer said he was elated to be back to physical fashion shows, "It is absolutely great to be back for a physical show after so long and that too outdoors against the stunning backdrop of the Dhyan Chand stadium which is a beautiful building."

The Bollywood Showstopper

Closing the glamorous show on a high note was Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon. Donning a draped corset gown that featured an all embroidered skirt with sheer panel and crystal highlights, she highlighted the true beauty of the new designs showcased. Sexy and comfortable, this is the outfit we are booking for a bride to wear for her cocktail night.

The Biggest Bridal Trends of 2022

If you're a couple scheduled to tie the knot this year, we even caught up with the maestro to know all about the key wedding trends for the season. "Brides and grooms that come to us are so much more evolved, want elegance and see themselves as they are rather than conform to the meditated notion of trying to look royal or a part of a movie. I think everyone has realised that their biggest role is their own and to be true to that, which I think is a lovely thing. I think that is the biggest trend that I see at the moment. Along with that, I also think sheer veils with long trails are going to continue to remain in fashion. Another fun trend, which I have noticed is brides coming in with their own baraats as an assertion of their independence which is absolutely lovely."

Further adding to the trends, Tarun spoke about what he envisions the TT bride and groom to look like this season, “The Tarun Tahiliani bride and groom want to look like themselves. So, while they dress up and have fun, they are secure enough not to play too much into the pageant, want to be comfortable, understated, yet super luxe and enjoy the wedding inside out.”
