“Modern and Contemporary” That’s the ethos of Deesh, founded by Jagdish Baghra, who loves designing sophisticated, feminine clothes inspired by the 1920’s era, right through to the 1970’s. Using only the highest quality fabrics, all designed and stitched in the U.K., think vibrant colours, floral prints, and breathable fabrics, hand-embellished with beads. Jagdish believes her collection is catered for the bride that wants something for a pre-wedding occasion like an engagement or mehndi party. Guests or bridesmaids who are looking for an outfit will visit Deesh for a style that has maximum impact but minimum weight and fuss.

Tell us a little more about yourself and why you founded Deesh?
When I was younger, I loved listening to my mum and aunties talking about outfits and fabrics. As I got older, I loved dressing up for weddings and occasions. I always created my own unique outfit, rather than buying something ready-made. I always had lots of compliments as my designs were unique and different, and generally less heavy than what was available in Indian shops.

What are popular trends at the moment?
In western world fashion, feminine dresses with floral prints, ruffles and frills are on trend. I’ve incorporated all this in my collection with frill tops, frills on lehenga skirts, and frill style dresses. Ostrich feathers are also on trend too, so I have added this to dupattas. Brides can either order an outfit on the website, or tweak designs to suit them. There are a range of colour and lace swatches to choose from, or I can design a bespoke outfit. I only use the purest of silks, and high quality lace. My designs are a fusion of East and West, and a lot are sold separately, so if you want to mix and match, you can! It’s important to get maximum wear out of my designs. The price range of my designs are from around £300 - £900.

Why should brides shop locally?
Think outside the box, and don’t follow the crowd by travelling to India to get those big designer names. You might get a personalised, loving service from somebody who owns a small business yet is equally talented. You might also be supporting somebody’s dream and helping the economy under the current climate. At Deesh we source fabrics from all over the world, meaning the whole world is brought to you in my showroom without having to travel far. You will also get one fitting before the outfit is made final, to ensure a perfect fit.”

Wise Wedding Words:
“A small wedding could be a blessing in disguise. You can invite your closest family and friends and have an intimate, more modern wedding that might not have been possible before. Then if you still want a big traditional wedding, save that for later, you have your whole life to be married and celebrate."
