Balmain X Barbie: The Newest Couture Collection That Celebrates Pink

Balmain dropped a new limited-edition collection with America’s best-loved fashion doll Barbie, and this steered conversations across the globe. At the centre of the intentionally inclusive campaign are black models and of course, dolls.

"Barbie and Balmain are embarking upon a distinctly multicultural, inclusive and always joy-filled adventure,” said Olivier Rousteing, Balmain, Creative Director. The first thing you’ll notice is the pink palette, since that colour has become synonymous with the brand. Further, the colour pink perfectly aligns with the modern Balmain Army’s bold spirit and the Parisian brand’s signatures like the iconic marinière and its mesmerizing labyrinth pattern. Olivier hence designed the collection’s palette to evolve from the softest blushes to a host of stronger tones.

The new collection features 50 high-end, ready-to-wear pieces for men and women, accessories and NFTs that reimagine Balmain designs by marrying them to the Barbie aesthetic, including lots of fun and pink looks. From dresses to hoodies, crop tops to blazers and bombers, swimsuits to handbags and eyewear, the collection oozes a playful spirit and a Parisian charm. The collection is strong, feminine and it brings the fantasy to the life of being a modern Balmain Barbie. Adding to the beauty is the singular colour palette, which runs from blush all the way to bubble-gum pink and fuchsia—with a few pops of white.

Olivier Rousteing and his Balmain design team have also been inspired by the Barbie universe’s familiar bright iconography. Badges, tees and hoodies cleverly channel the bold graphic treatment that one immediately recognises as Barbie’s—and many of the accessories are inventive hybrids of Balmain’s signature bags and Barbie packaging.
