An ode to Indian culture and craftsmanship, Rahul Mishra’s Couture Fall 2022 collection presented at the Paris Couture Week once again proved the designer’s excellence. The collection called ‘The Tree of Life’ embraced age-old motif that represents life, growth, and prosperity. Incorporating iconic elements of the design house, the gilded looks featured birds, animals, and flowers symbolising creations.

The grand collection took inspiration from one of the childhood memories of the designer. “Growing up in India, we witness numerous instances of worshipping trees. My grandmother would tie a hand-spun cotton thread around a banyan tree, not far from our house. The memory of this routine, of the ladies of the house worshipping the tree to bless their families, is a precious one,” shared Rahul. Going back to the real-life runway was the perfect opportunity for the only Indian designer inside the exclusive French couture community to showcase his distinctive skill and virtuosity.

Rahul Mishra brought to life motifs from nature with forms of two- and three-dimensional embroidery techniques. The supreme embellishments poured on modern silhouettes of plunged necklines and weighted shoulders had more to its ‘becoming’ behind the runway.  The designer shared about his journey that led him to “exceptional master craftsman Afzal Bhai” living in the urban slums of Mumbai. “I urged him to go back to his village, providing him the continuous support necessary to work with me from there. Today, our artisanal community is able to feed an average of a hundred craftsmen throughout the year, contributing in turn to the economy of the village.”

The couturier took a chance with one of the most embraced bridal colours—gold and perfected it with unique cuts and artisanal embroidery work. Each of these hand-woven and hand-embroidered looks that were created over hundreds of hours in various remote locations in India are archive-worthy and unparalleled masterpieces.
