With his artistic, documentary style approach to wedding photography, Mohsin Ali has come to be known as a mainstay in the industry and also won several awards for his craft. He focuses on capturing celebrations with authenticity and accuracy, while keeping the spotlight on the bride and groom. “As an unobtrusive photographer, I want to capture real moments that tell the story and that can’t be done if you are directing. You only get one chance,” the man behind renowned company Mohsin Ali Photography tells Khush. An ethereal, clean yet timeless feel best describes Mohsin’s aesthetic.
We tapped in on the photographer’s expertise to put together a guide that will ensure your wedding pictures create memories for life and a storm on social media.
A Place In The Sun
“Being a natural light photographer, the sun is my only light. So, I strive to effectively only use one light. For me, working with and understanding natural light in all its forms is crucial to creating consistent images and portfolio. Most times, the light guides me to capture the location at its best and poses to use. In case you need to set up other lighting, keep it simple. You don't need to setup 3-4 lights to create nice image.”
Right Angles
“I prefer candid over posed photographs. My work reflects my passion. What drives my photography is the personality of the bride. That’s the essential element when I take photographs. Today, mirror-less cameras allow us to remove the camera from our face, therefore you can play around really play around with composition and angles by raising the camera really high or placing them really low.”
Keep It Raw
“Whilst the main ceremony is most special, intimate and an important part of the day, my favourite is capturing the raw emotion at the reception. It’s when everyone comes together for this massive party, and let’s down their hair down. You can’t beat that vibe.”
Narrate Your Story
“Every wedding and couple have their own story to be told. There are many in the industry who use set techniques with the same backdrop. I have consciously stayed away from this, so the images looks unique. My idea is to create images that reflect my couple’s journey. Every detail helps me find inspiration for the portraits, from how they interact with each other to their wedding invites.”
Edit Out
“When it comes to colours, keep it clean and simple. Over-editing images detracts from the core essence of an image, so my editing is very minimal. For me, it’s the initial capture that counts. I had to develop that skill set to capture an image exactly how I want it to look in post-production.”
Stay Calm And Celebrate On
“The biggest stress on the wedding day is time. Ensure adequate time is allocated for all parts of a wedding. The portrait session is most crucial. Planning it properly will keep everyone calm and you will definitely get better images for this.”
Make It Viral
“Be very selective and upload images. Don’t be in a rush or any kind of pressure. Your images will reveal your story as a couple.”
