Listen up brides, it’s time to discard your Snapchat floral crown because when it comes to your Big Day, a filter just won’t do!
Whether you want statement blooms, traditional arrangements or boho romance style in your bridal hairstyle, we’ve got you covered.
It’s amazing the sheer number of varieties and shades flowers come in. Roses alone come in every shade under the sun, apart from blue and true black, so complementing flowers to your outfit, jewellery or décor colour scheme is really easy, as long as you keep an open mind.
Try to keep an open mind because if you have your heart set on a specific stem, they can be hard to source or extremely costly - especially if you want them out of season. So do some research to see what’s available and what will complement your outfit best.
Here are five ways to look blooming beautiful on your Big Day, no green fingers necessary…
Elegantly Traditional
If you’re having a traditional ceremony, your bridal outfit will have a mix of colours and embellishments, so why not use this as inspiration for your hairstyle?
We love this hair and makeup look by Shindy. The purple and white flower complement the whole look, with the purple perfectly complements the blouse and the delicate white jasmine entwined in the side plait keeping things dainty and romantic, but still traditional.
Back to Basics
Some styles never go out of fashion, and a classic red rose pinned into the side of a low bun is as effective as it’s ever been.
For a low-effort high-impact look, choose three full red roses for instant style points. Makeup artist Hema Poore demonstrates this perfectly by adding velvety roses to this bridal look, adding flair and a hint of colour without being overpowering.
High Fashion Florals
For brides who want to show off their style credentials, there’s no reason you can’t be playful with your petals! Use your outfit as a springboard but this time instead of matching your flowers to your look, go in the opposite direction for head-turning contrast.
Makeup artist Kajol Ali brought in vibrant marigolds to create a fashion-forward look. Not only do the flowers pop against their dupatta backdrop, but they also act as a bit of a halo, brightening our model’s gorgeous golden undertones.
Mix & Match
Why stick to one type of flower when there’s so many to choose from? Using different textures, colours and varieties will give your ‘do depth and style.
Here bridal hairstylist Mukhtar shows us how you to incorporate different florals in one look, layering small blooms under the larger ones.
If you want to use more than one type of flower, prevent the look from appearing too overwhelming by just the side of the hair of the underside of a bun, if you’re wearing a dupatta.
Dare to Wear
You know what they say about going big or going home? The same could apply to florals in your hair!
Statement style requires statement stems, and it doesn’t get more impressive than Shamalah Hairstylist’s pretty petal plait. You’ll need a LOT of flowers for this (make sure you tell your florist!) since the look begins at the bun before twisting down into the hip-length plait.
If your hair isn’t quite Rapunzel-level, ask your hairstylist to use extensions or hair pieces to give the illusion of length.
