Nude lipstick is the perfect way to complete a minimal, yet sultry look without exaggerated effort. But when we think of wedding makeup, we invariably lean towards a red or pink lip. While we don’t often associate a nude shade for brides, the soft and natural colour family can make for a modern, sophisticated choice. Just look at Alia Bhatt and Arpita Mehta’s bridal makeup for proof. For her intimate wedding in April 2022, Alia aced the ‘less is more’ makeup with bronzy tones on the eyelids and barely-there nude lipstick. Most recently, designer Arpita, too, made a case for nude lips with her wedding makeup.
We might have seen an uptick in the trend of late, but makeup artist Ganga has long been an advocate of nude lipstick for her brides and editorial shoots. We got the UK-based expert to reveal her tips and tricks on how you can ace nude lips on your big day. From playing up your eyes to her favourite products, she spills all the beans.
Apt For All
"Nude lipsticks give a more modern, contemporary and youthful look to the makeup and styling. Although it’s a great choice for every kind of bride on their big day, those who don’t wear a lot of makeup will surely appreciate it more because a bold colour like red may be so far out of their comfort zone. Most importantly, in my experience, I have realised that a nude lipstick is easier to maintain throughout the day,” shares Ganga.
For A Great Base
Ganga feels fresh-faced skin and sculpted brows pair best with a nude lip. Nude lip allows you to dress up the eyes in several ways, be it shimmer, saturated colour or even a bare minimum look. “With eyes, you can have some intensity with a smudgy kohl liner to create a smoky effect, like Bollywood bride Deepika Padukone did for her Konkani wedding in 2018. Or consider stripping it back to a no-makeup makeup look, which we saw on Alia Bhatt recently.”
Ganga’s Picks
“The starting point should be determining your skin tone. You can then decide you prefer a more brown or pink undertone. But you also don’t want the nude lip to just blend into your skin—it still needs to have that ‘pop’ even if it’s nude,” explains Ganga. “Two of my favourites are Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk - Matte Revolution original nude pink lipstick and M.A.C Matte Lipstick in shade Velvet Teddy. Pair it with a complementing lipliner. Consider M.A.C. Cosmetics’ Lip Pencil in Whirl or Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat lip liner in Iconic Nude. If you want a bit more of a pinkish-nude, then M.A.C. Cosmetics’ Lip Pencil in Soar is great to line,” she adds.
Perfect Pairings
Ganga reinstates that nude lips is a universal choice and pairs well with practically every silhouette and shade. “I have had brides who have beautifully carried nude lips with a range of colours, whether their wedding outfit was a pastel, green, blue or even bright traditional red,” she says.
